Wait Mode, Looping, Slow Tempo: How flowkey Makes Learning Piano Easier Than Ever

The flowkey Method
The difference between a frustrating practice session and a productive one usually comes down to control: can you slow the hard part down, repeat it as many times as you need, and get feedback the instant something's wrong? flowkey builds three features specifically for that — Wait Mode, adjustable tempo, and section looping. Here's what each one does and how to actually use them.

The tools

Wait Mode pauses the song until you play the correct note, so mistakes can't sneak past you.Adjustable tempo lets you slow a piece down while you're learning it, then speed it back up as it becomes automatic.Section looping lets you repeat just the bars that are giving you trouble instead of replaying the whole song. Used together, they let you practise at exactly the pace and precision a passage needs — something neither a live lesson's limited time nor most other apps' scored run-throughs make as easy.

Wait Mode: play at your own pace, not the song's

Wait Mode changes how the song responds to you. Instead of the sheet music scrolling past on a fixed timer, it pauses at each note and waits until you play the right one before moving on. Get a note wrong, and it simply waits — no red flash, no lost points, just another chance to try again. That matters because it removes the two things that usually derail a beginner: rushing to keep up with the tempo, and the temptation to just play on past a mistake because stopping to fix it feels like it's holding the song back. With Wait Mode, there's no song moving on without you. When to use it: on any new song or a passage you're still learning, especially anything with an unfamiliar hand position or rhythm. It's less useful once you've learned the notes and are working on playing the piece at full speed — that's when you switch to Just Play mode, which keeps tempo moving through mistakes so you can practise a real, uninterrupted run-through.

Slow tempo: build accuracy before you build speed

Every song in flowkey can be slowed down, so you can play a piece well below its normal speed while you're learning it, then gradually bring it back up as your fingers learn the movements. This is one of the most reliable techniques in music practice generally: play a passage too fast before you're ready, and you bake in hesitations and wrong notes that are genuinely harder to undo later than they would have been to avoid in the first place. When to use it: Each time you start learning a new song, or any time a passage feels rushed or you're making the same mistake repeatedly at full tempo. Drop the speed until you can play it accurately three times in a row, then nudge it back up.

Section looping: repeat the part you're learning

Many songs have one or two bars that cause almost all the trouble — an awkward chord change, a stretch between hands, a rhythm that doesn't feel natural yet. Section looping lets you mark just that part and repeat it on its own, rather than restarting the whole song every time you want another attempt. That sounds small, but it changes how efficient a practice session is. Replaying an entire three-minute song to get ten more seconds of practice on the hard bit wastes most of your session on the parts you've already got. Looping the hard bit means nearly all your practice time goes toward the thing you're actually trying to fix. When to use it: as soon as you notice you're making the same mistake in the same spot two or three times. Loop it, slow it down if needed, and only unloop once it's solid.

Putting it together: a real practice session

Start a new song at a slow tempo with Wait Mode on, so you can learn the notes and rhythm without pressure. When you hit a section that keeps tripping you up, loop it and drop the tempo further if you need to — repeat it until it's clean, then bring the speed back up gradually.

FAQ

What is Wait Mode on flowkey? A feedback mode that pauses the song at each note until you play it correctly, so you can learn at your own pace without the music moving on past a mistake. Can I slow down songs on flowkey? Yes — every song has an adjustable tempo, so you can practise well below full speed while you're learning it and increase the speed gradually as you improve. What does section looping do? It lets you repeat a specific part of a song — a few bars, or just one tricky chord change — on its own, instead of restarting the whole piece each time you want another attempt.Should I always use Wait Mode? No — it's most useful while you're still learning a piece. Once you know it, switch to Just Play mode so you can practise playing it through at full tempo without interruptions, which is closer to how you'll actually perform it.Do these features work with a MIDI keyboard, or just the microphone? Both. flowkey listens through your device's microphone or connects directly to a MIDI keyboard, and Wait Mode, tempo control and looping all work the same way either way — MIDI just gives slightly more precise note detection.
